This plant is one of four garnet recycling plants strategically located around the world. At a cost of US$2 million and annual processing capacity of 20,000 metric tonnes, the New Orleans plant is the culmination of many years of development and investment by the GMA Garnet Group to bring the concept of large scale garnet recycling plants to fruition.
United States garnet users now have access to an environmentally friendly and cost effective means of disposing their used garnet, as opposed to dumping the used material into land fill. It is estimated that in the United States alone, used garnet accounts for 65,000 cubic metres (2.3 million cubic feet) of land fill per annum.
The used garnet is treated through a series of mineral cleaning and separation processes, to transform the sludge into a high quality re-processed garnet that meets all industry international standards. The re-processed garnet is sold as GMR Quality Re-Processed Garnet. Product quality is maintained by stringent internal quality control processes, the same quality control processes that are in place at GMA’s principle garnet processing facility in Geraldton-Australia.
The garnet recycling plant is located within GMA’s massive loose bulk handling facility. The company imports loose bulk shipments of GMA Australian Garnet into the facility, where the material is stored, before being packaged and then shipped to customers in the Gulf Coast and of course around the United States.
